When deciding on a SUP, choosing a board with adequate volume can be the difference between a board that glides smoothly on the surface versus one that just sinks!
Selecting a board with proper volume is influenced by two key variables, rider weight and skill level. The RECOMMENDED RIDER WEIGHT CHART below lists our models by various rider weights (in pounds) at a beginner/novice skill level. Riders at a more advanced skill level may be capable of paddling boards below their weight tier.

The rail curve, or board shape, affects the turning capabilities of the board. A curvier shape will generate a tighter turning radius with less stability, whereas a straighter shape will produce greater stability with less manueverability.
Rocker refers to the upward "bending" of the nose and tail when lying the board flat. Boards have varying degrees of rocker depending on the board type. A flatter rocker will increase glide on still water while an increased rocker will produce optimal planing on wind chopped water. Boards with greater nose rocker will be more forgiving on wave and vertical entry, but will be slower and more unstable on flat water. In general, boards with a lot of nose and tail rocker are used for wave riding rather than cruising.

The key features of a paddle are the handle, shaft and blade. JIMMY STYKS® paddles are available in 4 styles: aluminum shaft, carbon fiber, adjustable length and travel.
A SUP paddle should be 8” - 10” taller than the height of the rider. For adjustable length paddles, sizing is fairly simple and non-permanent. Fixed shaft paddles will require cutting the shaft to the appropriate length and permanently affixing the handle to the shaft. For detailed instructions, refer to the JIMMY STYKS® OWNER’S GUIDE.
Known for their durability and cost efficient production, aluminum shaft paddles offer the best “bang for buck”. These paddles typically have excess shaft length that will require sizing before use.
Carbon fiber paddles are the preferred paddle among pro SUP riders. This ultra light paddle is great for long paddle sessions and for reducing paddling fatigue. The trade-off for performance is durability. These paddles typically have excess shaft length that will require sizing before use.
Adjustable length paddles are the go-to solution for paddles used by multiple users or riders that are unsure of their preferred shaft length. These paddles can be temporarily sized and resized via a shaft locking mechanism.
Similar to adjustable length paddles, travel paddles can be temporarily sized and resized via a shaft locking mechanism. In addition, the travel paddle can be further broken down into 2 separate halves for easier transport.
All of our paddles are available for purchase online.Visit the JIMMY STYKS® STORE.
Paddles have a FORWARD and BACK facing side. The ribbed side of the handle, adjustable lever and “JIMMY STYKS™” logo on the blade indicate the FORWARD facing side. Additionally, blade should be in a FORWARD ANGLE.
Proper paddle orientation while paddling will maximize stroke efficiency and move the greatest volume of water when paddling. By practicing proper paddling techniques, you will be able to paddle longer and farther while conserving energy.
Boards are designed for specific environments, riding styles and convenience features. These are a few of the most popular styles widely used today:
Cruisers are designed for general all-around performance in most water environments. A typical cruiser is 10’0” to 12’6” in height and 29-32” in width. Cruiser shapes follow minimal arc along the rail for greater stability. Generally, cruisers are either designed with ocean or flat-water performance in mind. Ocean or Coastal cruisers feature greater nose and tail rocker for planing wind-chopped water whereas flat-water cruisers have a flatter bottom for ease of glide.

Hybrid SUP boards incorporate the key performance features of both coastal and flat-water cruisers. With slightly more rocker than a flat-water cruiser and a wider platform than a coastal cruiser, hybrids make a great all-around board for beginners and riders crossing over from flat-water to ocean and vice versa.

While designed for different applications, both racing and touring boards are designed for maximum efficiency. This is accomplished by using a displacement hull on the underside of the board to move or displace water along the length of the board. The displacement of water at the front of the board reduces the amount of drag that slows down boards with a flat-planing style hull. Racing/touring boards tend to be unstable and require a higher level of riding skill and experience.

Wave SUP boards are designed specifically for wave surfing. Generally smaller than a typical cruiser, Wave SUP boards require a much higher level of riding skill. Wave SUP boards tend to have increased rocker in the nose and tail to keep the board from submerging while moving down the face of the wave. The rail curve features a greater arc for a tighter turning radius. The increased rocker and exaggerated arc shape make the wave sup unstable and less suitable for flat-water paddling.

Soft SUP boards are designed for longevity and efficient production. Most soft SUP boards feature a dense foam core wrapped in a softer foam layer on top and hard plastic surface on the underside. Due to their low investment cost and durability, Soft Sup boards are a great choice for those first entering the sport of stand up paddle or for rental shops. Serious beginner riders that stick with the sport will inevitably “outgrow” the soft SUP boards and may want to consider a cruiser or hybrid model.

Inflatable SUPs, aka iSUPs are just that, SUP’s that can be inflated and deflated for compact storage and convenient transport. There are varying degrees of quality in construction methods. A high quality iSUP employs dropstitch construction resulting in an impressively rigid inflatable with very minimal flex.
